I. School overview
Founded in 2003, School of Environment, Beijing Normal University was formerly known as the Environmental Science Institute that came into being in 1983. The school is among the first Chinese academic platforms approved by the Ministry of Education to deal with environmental science research and education, and is also recognized as a high-level talent development base. After years of development, the school has formed a Level 1 Environmental Science and Engineering subject system characterized by a complete range of disciplines, distinctive functions, and a focus on advantageous areas. Among these disciplines, Environmental Sciences has been included in the list of National Key Disciplines, while Environmental Engineering has been identified as a Beijing Key Discipline. Level 2 subjects concerning water conservancy projects and theoretical economics are also growing rapidly and gaining increasing influence and recognition both at home and abroad. In the latest subject ranking of the Ministry of Education, the Level 1 Environmental Science and Engineering subject of School of Environment, Beijing Normal University won a rating of A, ranking top among Chinese universities and colleges. According to ESI statistics concerning world top 1% subjects published in November 202, the Environment/ecology subject of School of Environment, Beijing Normal University ranked No. 22 (top 0.02%) in all 1342 universities evaluated in terms of total number of papers, and No. 77 (top 0.06) in terms of total citations, thus becoming the first subject in our university to rank among ESI’s top 1‰ subjects. In the first Chinese Subject Ranking organized by Times Higher Education, our Environmental Science and Engineering subject received A+. This subject was rated 49th in a world ranking of US News, and 94th in that of QS. In addition to building a complete subject system, the school attaches great importance to international exchanges and cooperation, as witnessed by a number of global cooperation programs, including “master and doctor programs taught in English”. So far, the school has admitted 45 foreign students and exchange students from France, India, Pakistan, and other countries. By combining theories with practices, they have made remarkable academic achievements, and participated in many major scientific research projects of national, provincial, or municipal levels.
II. Introduction of master and doctor programs taught in English
As the global economy continues to evolve, the environmental and ecological system of our planet has changed dramatically, causing many environmental issues to grow in severity, including carbon emission, global warming, wastewater discharge, water pollution, energy consumption, and shortage or non-renewable resources. Solving these challenges necessitates development of professional environment talents possessing both solid basic knowledge and innovation capabilities. Bearing this in mind, School of Environment, Beijing Normal University has launched the “master and doctor programs taught in English” based on its unique educational functions and advantages. Starting from a global vision, these programs are intended to nurture environment professionals and solve practical environment problems confronted by the entire human race with intellectual resources from China.
(I) Doctor program taught in English
1. Education targets
This program is intended to cultivate senior professional talents with the following qualities: with a high level of personal and academic morals; with broad and solid fundamental knowledge and systematic and in-depth expertise in their respective subjects; familiar with latest technologies and methods concerning environmental scientific research and environmental engineering technical R&D; familiar with academic standards as well as history, current conditions, and tends of their respective subjects at home and abroad; with certain international communication experiences; with the capabilities to conduct independent scientific research work or practical work; with intensive studies and innovative research findings in environmental science & engineering and relevant fields; qualified for academic research or teaching work in their respective subjects and relevant disciplines after graduation.
2. Program duration
3 years for doctor students, not exceeding 6 years.

(II) Master program taught in English
1. Education targets
With globalization gaining speed, ecological and environmental issues have become major subjects of attention in the international arena. The achievements China has made in protecting ecological environment and pursuing balanced social and economic development are remarkable and widely recognized worldwide. China has accumulated abundant technologies and experiences in environmental protection that can support and contribute to sustainable development in other countries. Confronted with the global demand for sustainable growth and the environmental challenges, nurturing ecological and environment protection and management talents with a global vision has become a task of top priority. School of Environment, Beijing Normal University provides strong scientific research and teaching capabilities in this field, with its Environmental Sciences included in the list of National Key Disciplines, and Environmental Engineering identified as a Beijing Key Discipline. Its Environmental Sciences and Engineering is a Level 1 national subject.
This program is designed for outstanding students in environmental science and related disciplines. It aims to develop students’ abilities to analyze and explore ecological and environmental issues as well as their innovation capabilities, thus developing technical and management talents with an innovative mind who can address global ecological and environmental challenges.
2. Program duration
The master program is typically 2 years in length. Early graduation is not allowed. The duration can be extended to 3 years at most for students failing to complete study on schedule.
