International MA Program in Chinese Philosophy (English Taught)

1. Introduction
The School of Philosophy at Beijing Normal University, one of China’s premier institutes of higher education, offers a two-year Master’s Degree in Chinese Philosophy.
The program offers a comprehensive range of courses in the major traditions of Chinese philosophy, including Confucianism, Daoism, and Buddhism, as well as an inclusive range of courses in the Chinese philosophies of history, ethics, and politics. Courses emphasize comparative and international perspectives while engaging with the Western and other great traditions of world philosophy.
The program is conducted in English and is offered to students who intend to go on to pursue Ph.D. or other graduate-level international and professional studies in philosophy, comparative philosophy, or Chinese philosophy, as well as in international law, international political studies, and international cultural studies. It is also offered to students who intend to enter the professional work force at any international level with relevance to China.
The International MA Program is fully accredited by Beijing Normal University and the Chinese Ministry of Education.
Applications for admission beginning in Fall 2026 will end on March 10th.

2. Course Overview
During the first three semesters, students must complete 35 credits from core and elective courses. By the end of the fourth semester, students are required to submit a master’s thesis. This requirement offers students the opportunity to conduct independent research in a field of Chinese philosophy of their own interest, thereby deeply enriching their academic experience of studying Chinese philosophy in China.

4. Tuition and Scholarship
The tuition fee for MA Program is RMB 60,000 for the two-year program of full-time study.
Students are encouraged to apply for various scholarships, including the Chinese Government Scholarship Type A: Youth of Excellence Scheme of China Program and the Chinese Government Scholarship Type B: Chinese University Program. In recent years, every student enrolled in the MA Program has received a full scholarship, achieving 100% scholarship coverage.
5. How to Apply
1.Register for an account at https://international.bnu.edu.cn and sign in.
2.Submit all required information as guided.
3.Pay an application fee of 600 RMB (non-refundable) through the payment system on the website.
4.Sit for an online interview (interview notification will be sent via email, and interview results will be shown in the system).
6. Application Requirements
1.Applicants should be non-Chinese citizens holding a foreign passport and under 50 years old (Date of Birth after August 31, 1976).
2.Applicants should have a degree equivalent to a Bachelor’s or above from an accredited college or university.
3.Language proficiency requirements:
(1)All non-native English speakers must certify that they have passed a recognized English-language proficiency test, preferably TOEFL (90) or IELTS (6/5.5).
(2)Applicants who received their academic degrees from an English language program are not required to provide proof of English proficiency, but must submit relevant documents that support it (e.g., a certificate issued by the graduating institution.
