Beijing Normal University 2026 Admission Brochure for Chinese Language Program
I. General Introduction
1. Different Levels of Classes & Small Class Teaching
International students with zero or any level of Chinese proficiency are welcome to join the Chinese Language Program for International Students. The core feature of this program lies in its scientifically stratified teaching approach. Based on Chinese proficiency standards, the teaching system is meticulously divided into seven levels. After enrollment, students will take a placement test to determine their Chinese proficiency level, and then enter the corresponding class for systematic learning. This ensures that the teaching content is accurately matched to individual abilities. In terms of teaching format, the program adopts a small-class teaching model with 15-20 students. This fully guarantees each student's speaking practice time in class, truly realizing the "student-centered" customized teaching.
2. Strong and Committed Teachers & Full Range of Curriculum
Beijing Normal University has been engaged in international student education since the 1960s and is one of the earliest institutions of higher education in China to embark on this field. Relying on a faculty team with profound teaching experience, the university conducts systematic teaching around the four core dimensions of "listening, speaking, reading, and writing," helping international students solidly improve their Chinese communicative competence. Meanwhile, through diverse course modules such as Chinese history, literature, and geography, the university guides students to gain an in-depth insight into Chinese culture and social features.
In terms of curriculum design, in addition to core compulsory courses, the university has also carefully offered a variety of elective courses, including calligraphy, martial arts, Chinese tourism geography, and selected readings of ancient Chinese poetry. These courses not only effectively stimulate international students' interest in Chinese learning but also help them perceive the profound heritage and cultural connotations behind the Chinese language from broader perspectives such as culture, art, and human geography.
3. Entertainment & Extracurricular Activity
To help international students comprehensively perceive the charm of Chinese and deeply integrate into Chinese culture, this program has elaborately built a diverse extracurricular activity system. The activities feature rich and varied forms, covering distinctive contents such as Peking Opera and acrobatics art appreciation, Chinese traditional music listening experiences, and on-site visits to historical and cultural sites. These activities serve as an out-of-class cultural practice platform for students.
Through immersive cultural experience activities, students not only get to practice their Chinese expression and application abilities in real and vivid language scenarios but also can intuitively feel the unique charm and profound heritage of traditional Chinese culture. Furthermore, this deepens their cognition and understanding of Chinese history, culture, and social life, enabling the dual improvement of language learning and cultural perception.
II. Study Duration and Study Mode
The duration of study is one semester or one academic year. Different classes are arranged for beginners and students of advanced levels (Study in the School of International Chinese Language Education). Students will be placed in the appropriate class after a placement test upon registration. 《Curriculum and Course Descriptions》
